As you shop, use these helpful tips from Diamonds International to ensure an experience that will be as perfect as your new diamond.
The Basics - The Four C's
Cut
The angles, proportions and execution of the diamonds design. The cut also refers to the shape of the diamond (i.e. round, marquis, oval, heart) and accounts for the brilliance - or sparkle -of the diamond.
Color
The angles, proportions and execution of the diamonds design. The cut also refers to the shape of the diamond (i.e. round, marquis, oval, heart) and accounts for the brilliance - or sparkle -of the diamond.
Clarity
The presence of surface or internal flaws created during the natural diamond formation process often referred to as inclusions, or Mother Nature's finger-prints. The most rare are "internally flawless" diamonds;
clarity grades run from Very, very slightly included' (WS), 'very slightly included' (VS), to 'slightly included' (SI) and 'included' (I).
Carat
The weight of the diamond. Diamonds with larger carat weights are more rare and thus more valuable. A diamond can appear larger or smaller depending on the cut and mounting.
Cleaning
To maintain your diamond's brilliance, follow this simple method of cleaning your diamond jewelry: Let the diamond soak in warm water and a mild liquid soap; gently brush it with a soft toothbrush. Rinse each piece under warm running water; dry with a soft, clean cloth. When rinsing, be sure to cover your sink drain! Brand name liquid jewelry cleaners are also sufficient.
Protection
Although diamonds are the hardest natural substance, one diamond can scratch another diamond. It is important that you store your diamond jewelry separately to eliminate any chance of scratches and tangles. Remove your diamond jewelry when performing heavy work as this can cause chipping or settings to become loose.
Budget
It is a good idea to have a budget in mind, but remain flexible! The desire and value of diamonds is constant, so consider your perfect diamond not only a symbol of your love, but also a worthy investment. One well-known guideline for a diamond engagement ring is two month's salary, but don't pass up your ideal diamond because of price! Consider payment methods like credit cards or financing to ease financial stress.
